We should start by answering the question: “What is Mindfulness?”
To begin with, if you are like most people, you spend the majority of your waking thoughts either ruminating about the past or being concerned with thoughts about the future. You probably spend very little time in the here and now: In This Moment.
The problem here is that typically when we ruminate about the past, we are often replaying negative tapes about regrets we have or wishing something could have been different. And, when our thoughts are in the future, we are often worrying about many things that are out of our control, or wondering if we’re going to repeat mistakes we feel we’ve made. If you’ve noticed—neither being past- or future-oriented seems to make our life in the moment any different or better, in fact past and future thinking is actually filled with a lot of negatively that causes us undue stress, anxiety, and mental anguish. Yet we continue this type of thinking, day after day, year after year, and what we’re totally missing out on…..is the NOW!!
“Mindfulness” is simply about being in the moment: in the here and now. At its most basic component, Mindfulness is about being intimately aware of the breath—the current single breath that you are breathing right this moment.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is something that is used at Stress Management Counseling Center to first teach you how to simply be in the moment, and how to bring yourself into the moment at any time, wherever you may be. Once we’ve assisted you in developing these skills, we will help you to use these skills to neutralize the stress in your life and even to take control over the chronic pain or physical conditions that are causing you undue anguish and robbing you of life’s joy.
